The fort, known as Derventio in antiquity, was established in the late first century AD as part of the Roman military infrastructure controlling the Midlands and Peak District region. The site preserves substantial earthwork remains including the fort's defences and internal structures, which provide evidence of its layout and garrison during the second century AD. Archaeological investigation has revealed artefacts and structural evidence indicating the fort served as an important auxiliary installation along the road system connecting major Roman centres in Britain.
