Loch Sgaorishal shielings, located 800 metres south-west of the western end of Loch Sgaorishal on the Isle of Rum in Argyllshire, is a cluster of seasonal pastoral shelters dating to the post-medieval period. These structures represent the material remains of transhumant pastoralism, a widespread agricultural practice in the Scottish Highlands and Islands whereby livestock, particularly cattle, were driven to remote upland pastures during summer months whilst permanent settlements remained in lower ground. The shielings comprise the characteristic stone foundations and ruins of small, temporary dwellings constructed to house herders during the grazing season, reflecting the economic and settlement patterns of Highland and Island communities from at least the medieval period through to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
