Lochawe crannog, situated approximately 600 metres south-east of Lochawe in Argyllshire, is an Iron Age to Medieval artificial island settlement. The site represents a form of defended domestic occupation characteristic of Scottish freshwater lochs, whereby a timber-built structure was constructed upon a submerged or partially submerged platform of stone and wood. The crannog's extended occupation span from the Iron Age through the Medieval period indicates sustained use across several centuries, reflecting the strategic and practical advantages offered by lacustrine settlement in this region. Such crannogs served as residences for local populations and potentially as centres of local authority, their defensive qualities and insularity making them valuable settlements during periods of social instability.
