History & significance

Rockhill Farm crannogs is a pair of Iron Age to Medieval artificial island settlements located in Argyllshire, Scotland, situated approximately 750 metres north-east and 200 metres north of Rockhill Farm. Crannogs of this period represent a distinctive form of settlement construction, whereby timber-built structures were erected on artificially constructed or modified islands within freshwater lochs, providing defensible and resource-rich habitation. The site's occupation spanning from the Iron Age through the Medieval period indicates sustained use and adaptation across more than a millennium, reflecting the strategic value of loch-side settlement in the Scottish Highlands.
