Lochrinnie Mote is a medieval motte situated 250 metres west-north-west of Craigmuie Lodge in Kirkcudbrightshire. The monument consists of an earthen mound typical of twelfth and thirteenth-century fortifications in south-west Scotland, when such structures served as the strongholds of local lords and landholders. The motte would originally have supported a timber palisade and tower, affording commanding views across the surrounding landscape.
The site rises from bedrock of the Shinnel and Glenlee Formations, Ashgill wacke deposits that characterise this part of the Galloway region. This relatively hard sandstone substrate would have provided stable foundations for the carefully constructed earthwork. The choice of location reflects the strategic importance placed upon defensive positions during the medieval period, allowing control over local routes and settlement patterns.
Lochrinnie Mote is protected as a scheduled monument by Historic Environment Scotland under reference SM1125. Though the timber superstructure has long since decayed, the earthwork survives as a distinctive landscape feature, preserving evidence of the feudal settlement patterns and territorial organisation that shaped medieval Kirkcudbrightshire.
