Auchenhay is a settlement located in Kirkcudbrightshire, in the south-west of Scotland, approximately one kilometre south of Auchenhay proper. The site sits on bedrock of the Gala Group, a formation of wacke that dates to the Telychian period of the Silurian era, around 430 million years ago. This ancient greywacke provides the underlying geology of much of the Southern Uplands in this region, and would have influenced both the drainage and the soil composition of the settlement site.
The settlement remains are protected as a scheduled monument by Historic Environment Scotland under reference SM5179, recognising their significance to understanding rural settlement patterns in south-west Scotland. The precise date and period of occupation at Auchenhay have yet to be established through archaeological investigation, though the site's location and form are consistent with settlements of medieval or post-medieval date found throughout this part of Kirkcudbrightshire.
The landscape surrounding the settlement reflects the rolling moorland and improved farmland characteristic of the region. The Gala Group bedrock, whilst resistant to erosion, breaks down into productive soils where conditions allow, contributing to the agricultural potential that would have drawn settlement to this location in earlier centuries.
