Overview

History & significance

London Wall is a scheduled ancient monument comprising substantial remains of the defensive circuit that enclosed the Roman city of Londinium from the late second century onwards. The surviving section stretches westward from All Hallows Church to 38 Camomile Street and exhibits characteristics of both its Roman foundation and medieval reconstruction and maintenance. The wall was constructed in coursed ragstone with tile bonding courses typical of Roman military engineering, and portions were reinforced and rebuilt during the medieval period as the wall continued to define the boundary of the City of London. This monument represents one of the most significant surviving examples of Roman urban fortification in Britain and demonstrates the continuity of civic defence from the Roman period through the medieval era.
