London Wall is a substantial section of Roman defensive fortification surviving from the late second century onwards, constructed to protect the expanding settlement of Londinium. The visible remains extend from Bevis Marks to India Street and comprise stone wall foundations, later medieval repairs, and masonry that demonstrates the ongoing strategic importance of this barrier through the medieval period. The wall exhibits typical Roman military engineering characteristics, built in coursed ragstone with tile bonding, and would originally have stood significantly higher than the current surviving height. The Aldgate, which pierced this section of the wall, served as a principal entrance to the City of London throughout the medieval period, functioning both as a defensive structure and a vital commercial gateway controlling access along the Roman road to Essex.
