Overview

History & significance

Lots of Callander is a post-medieval palisaded enclosure located approximately fifty metres south-east of Callander in Perthshire, Scotland. The site comprises earthwork evidence of timber palisade defences characteristic of early modern fortification practices in lowland Scotland. Such enclosures typically date from the sixteenth or seventeenth century and served defensive or administrative functions for settlements or holdings during a period of evolving military architecture before the widespread adoption of stone fortifications. The survival of palisade earthworks at this location provides archaeological evidence of the landscape organisation and settlement patterns of post-medieval Perthshire.
