Overview

History & significance

Maclellan's Castle is a substantial Renaissance tower house located in Kirkcudbright, Kirkcudbrightshire, constructed in the mid-sixteenth century for the McClellan family, prominent local landowners. The castle exemplifies Scottish baronial architecture of its period, featuring a four-storey rectangular tower with projecting bartizans at the angles and commanding views over the surrounding landscape. Built around 1569 by Thomas McClellan, provost of Kirkcudbright, the structure retains its principal residential chambers, including a hall, kitchen with a large fireplace, and private apartments arranged vertically within the tower. The castle remained in use until the eighteenth century and now stands as a roofless but substantially preserved example of Renaissance domestic architecture in the south-west of Scotland.
