Martello tower no 30 is a coastal defensive structure built during the Napoleonic Wars in the early nineteenth century as part of the extensive chain of fortifications constructed along the Sussex coast. The tower forms part of the systematically designed series of Martello towers erected between 1805 and 1812 to counter the threat of French invasion during the Napoleonic period. These standardised circular or polygonal towers were built of brick and stone, typically standing around forty feet in height, and were designed to accommodate a small garrison with artillery mounted on the roof. Tower no 30 represents a significant example of early nineteenth-century military architecture and remains an important testament to the defensive preparations undertaken during one of Britain's most critical periods of national security.
