Martello tower no 9, Sandgate is a circular defensive tower constructed during the Napoleonic Wars in the early 19th century as part of a nationwide chain of coastal fortifications designed to counter the threat of French invasion. Built of brick and standing approximately 40 feet in height with characteristic tapering walls, the tower exemplifies the standardised design of these compact but effective fortifications that were distributed along vulnerable stretches of the English coastline. The tower features a domed roof and was originally fitted with a cannon mounted on top to provide artillery defence against approaching enemy vessels. Now standing as a scheduled ancient monument, it represents an important survival of Regency-era military architecture and remains one of the best-preserved examples of its type in the Folkestone area.
