Medieval moated site, Albury Farm, Merstham is a scheduled ancient monument consisting of the earthwork remains of a medieval moat that survives as a substantial rectangular feature in the landscape. The site dates to the medieval period, when such moated enclosures were constructed as defensive and status-bearing features by landholders across southern England. The moat at Albury Farm comprises a water-filled or water-retaining ditch that originally surrounded a residential platform, typical of moated sites that achieved particular prominence during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The survival of the earthwork demonstrates the enduring physical legacy of medieval settlement patterns in this part of Surrey.
