History & significance

Little Broughton is a medieval settlement site in Yorkshire consisting of the remains of a planned village layout together with associated ridge and furrow field systems and the site of a medieval chapel. The settlement demonstrates the characteristic morphology of a medieval nucleated village, with evidence of toft and croft divisions that reflect the organised agrarian planning typical of the High Medieval period. The chapel site indicates the presence of religious infrastructure within the settlement community, whilst the preservation of field systems demonstrates the intensive agricultural exploitation of the surrounding landscape during the medieval period. The monument as a whole provides archaeological evidence for medieval rural settlement patterns and the organisation of both domestic and agricultural space within a Yorkshire village context.
