Overview

History & significance

Middleton Top winding engine house, wheels and wheel-pit is a pumping station associated with the Middleton branch of the High Peak Railway, constructed in the early nineteenth century. The site comprises a stone-built engine house containing winding machinery, together with large wheels and a wheel-pit that formed part of the inclined plane system used to haul wagons up the steep gradient of the railway. The installation demonstrates the engineering solutions employed during the early railway age to overcome topographical challenges on mineral railways serving the Derbyshire lead and limestone industries. The structures remain substantially intact and represent an important survival of industrial railway infrastructure from the pioneering period of mechanical rail transport.
