Moat Farm is a medieval moated site located 750 metres south-west of St Lawrence's Church in Essex. The monument comprises the earthwork remains of a moat, a water-filled defensive or status-enhancing enclosure typical of medieval manor houses and substantial farms from the twelfth century onwards. Such moated sites were common features of the English medieval landscape, particularly in lowland areas, and often indicate the presence of a significant residential or agricultural establishment. The surviving earthwork evidence at Moat Farm preserves an important archaeological record of medieval settlement and land use in Essex.
