West End House moated site is a medieval residential enclosure located approximately 640 metres west of St Lawrence's Church in Essex. The site comprises a moat of substantial proportions that once defended a domestic dwelling, typical of the medieval period when such water-filled defences were constructed around the properties of manorial lords and substantial landowners. The moated enclosure represents an important example of medieval settlement organisation in Essex and demonstrates the domestic architecture and land use patterns of the medieval countryside.
