A moated site at Church Panel is a medieval earthwork monument located in Bedfordshire. The site comprises a substantial rectangular moat that formerly enclosed a residential or manorial precinct, representing a form of domestic fortification common among the medieval gentry and minor nobility from the 12th century onwards. Such moated sites, whilst not fortified in the military sense, served to demarcate status and provide practical defence against common medieval hazards including livestock theft and casual trespass. The earthwork survives as a prominent topographical feature and constitutes important archaeological evidence for the settlement patterns and social organisation of medieval Bedfordshire.
