The moated site at Grove Farm, Ashley Green, is a medieval monument consisting of a substantial water-filled or formerly water-filled ditch surrounding a residential enclosure. Such moated homesteads were a characteristic form of settlement and landholding in medieval England, particularly from the twelfth century onwards, and served both defensive and status-indicating functions for their occupants. The site's survival as an earthwork feature preserves evidence of the medieval landscape and settlement patterns of Buckinghamshire, contributing to understanding of rural medieval habitation in the county.
