History & significance

This moated site 560 metres north-east of Chesterford Park is a medieval earthwork monument consisting of a substantial rectangular moat enclosing a residential platform. The monument dates to the medieval period and represents a form of domestic settlement characteristic of the 12th to 16th centuries, when moated enclosures served as defensive and status-bearing residences for lesser nobility and substantial landholders. The physical remains are preserved as earthen banks and ditches defining the moat's perimeter, with the interior platform retaining evidence of former occupation. Such moated sites are common across Essex and the south-eastern counties, providing important archaeological evidence for the distribution and character of medieval rural settlement.
