Tadgells is a moated site located approximately 100 metres south-west of The Cottage in Essex. The monument comprises a substantial rectangular moat surrounding what would have been a residential dwelling, typical of medieval domestic settlements of the 12th to 16th centuries. Such moated sites were common features of the English landscape during the medieval period, serving both defensive and status-indicating functions for their occupants. The earthwork remains of the moat survive as a significant archaeological record of medieval settlement patterns in Essex.
