Tanner's Cottage is a moated site located approximately 250 metres south of Greens in Essex, England. The monument comprises a substantial rectangular moat surrounding the former domestic occupation, typical of medieval settlement patterns in the county. Such moated homesteads were characteristic features of the Essex landscape from the twelfth century onwards, serving both defensive and drainage functions for aristocratic and gentry households. The site represents an important example of medieval settlement archaeology and provides evidence of the dispersed pattern of rural habitation that characterised the medieval Essex countryside.
