Overview

History & significance

Ongar Park Pale is a fragmentary earthwork forming part of a medieval deer park boundary in Essex. The pale, a linear bank and ditch feature, dates to the medieval period and represents the physical demarcation of a hunting enclosure associated with the aristocratic estate at Ongar. The surviving section northwest of Collier's Hatch preserves evidence of the park's extent and management during the later medieval period, though much of the original boundary has been lost to subsequent agricultural use and development. Such pale boundaries were characteristic features of elite landscape control in medieval England, serving both practical and symbolic functions in the organization of lordly estates.
