The monument comprises a substantial rectangular moat which once enclosed a residential or manorial settlement, a form of defensive and prestige earthwork characteristic of medieval England. Such moated sites were typically constructed from the 12th century onwards, with many continuing in use through the medieval period and beyond. The surviving earthworks at Marshalls represent a significant example of the settlement archaeology of Essex and provide evidence of the distribution and character of medieval domestic occupation in the region.
