Moatland Motte is a medieval motte situated in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. The monument consists of an earthen mound characteristic of Norman and early medieval fortification design, typical of the late eleventh and twelfth centuries. Such mottes, often accompanied by bailey enclosures, served as defensive strongholds and administrative centres for feudal lords during the period of Norman influence in southern Scotland. The site represents an important example of early medieval military architecture in the region and its survival provides valuable evidence of settlement patterns and lordship structures in medieval Dumfriesshire.
