The motte and bailey earthwork situated in the grounds of a manor house in Buckinghamshire is a Norman defensive structure dating from the eleventh or twelfth century. The monument comprises a raised mound, or motte, accompanied by an attached or adjacent bailey, an enclosed courtyard defended by a palisade and ditch, typical of early Norman fortification. Such earthwork castles were rapidly constructed throughout England following the Norman Conquest of 1066 and served as administrative centres and military strongholds for the Norman lords who controlled the landscape. The survival of this example within later manorial grounds demonstrates the continuity of settlement and lordship at this location across the medieval period.
