Motte castle 100m north of The Hall, Sandford is a Norman defensive earthwork consisting of an artificial mound with associated bailey enclosure, typical of early medieval fortification in the Welsh Marches. The site dates to the late eleventh or twelfth century, a period of intense castle building following the Norman Conquest as lords sought to consolidate territorial control in the border region between England and Wales. The motte survives as a substantial raised platform, whilst the bailey represents the outer defended enclosure characteristic of motte-and-bailey design. Such works were common in frontier areas of Norman England and demonstrate the military strategies employed to maintain Norman dominance in contested borderland territories.
