The motte castle and associated settlement remains located 150 metres north-north-west of Lower Down Farm is a Norman fortification situated in Shropshire. The site comprises a mounded earthwork typical of early medieval defensive architecture, dating to the Norman period following the conquest of 1066. The motte, constructed as a raised artificial or partly artificial mound, would have supported timber or stone defensive structures, whilst the surrounding terrain contains evidence of contemporary settlement occupation. This monument represents an important example of the rapid militarisation of the English landscape under Norman rule, when such fortifications were established across newly conquered territories to consolidate administrative control and defence.
