Burnt mounds, also known as fulachtaí fia, are distinctive Iron Age sites characterised by accumulations of fire-cracked stone, charcoal, and scorched earth, typically interpreted as evidence of cooking or heating activities, possibly involving water-heating in wooden troughs or stone-lined pits. The proximity of these features to the broch—a distinctive Iron Age stone tower—suggests settlement activity concentrated in this area during the Iron Age period. The site forms part of the broader archaeological landscape of Mousa, which is notable for containing one of the best-preserved brochs in Scotland.
