Nether Tillyrie is a settlement and souterrain situated on the bedrock of ancient mafic lava and tuff deposited during the Devonian period. This Iron Age site lies in Kinross-shire, occupying ground formed from the consolidated volcanic rocks that underlie much of the local landscape. The combination of defensible terrain and accessible water sources made this area attractive to Iron Age communities who constructed permanent settlements across central Scotland.
The souterrain, a characteristic subterranean stone-built structure of the Iron Age, would have functioned as a storage facility, refuge, or ritual space associated with the settlement above. Such underground chambers survive well when constructed within stable bedrock, and the Silurian to Devonian geology at Nether Tillyrie would have provided suitable conditions for their construction and preservation.
