Newcastle upon Tyne town defences is a section of medieval curtain wall and associated town ditch located between Forth Street and Hanover Street in Newcastle. The surviving wall section forms part of the town's defensive circuit, which was substantially developed from the late twelfth century onwards as Newcastle grew in commercial and strategic importance. The curtain wall, constructed in stone, represents a significant element of the town's medieval fortification system that once enclosed the urban settlement. The adjacent ditch would have functioned as an additional defensive obstacle, typical of urban fortification design of the medieval period.
