Newmill enclosures, southwest of the settlement of Newmill in Peeblesshire, is a post-medieval field system comprising a series of stone-built or stone-marked boundaries characteristic of early modern agricultural reorganisation in the Scottish Borders. Dating to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the enclosures represent the transition from medieval open-field farming practices to more intensive, individually managed plots typical of post-medieval landholding. The field divisions, preserved as linear features across the landscape, reflect both practical agricultural requirements and evolving patterns of land tenure during a period of significant economic change in the region. Such enclosure systems constitute important archaeological evidence for understanding rural settlement and economy in early modern southern Scotland.
