Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork monument constructed during the late eighth century under the direction of King Offa of Mercia as a defensive and territorial boundary between the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and the Welsh kingdoms to the west. This section, located south-west of Stowfield Farm in Gloucestershire, forms part of the extensive dyke system that originally stretched approximately 240 kilometres from the Dee estuary in the north to the Severn estuary in the south. The monument at this location survives as a substantial bank and ditch earthwork, typical of the dyke's characteristic construction method. The Stowfield Farm section represents an important surviving example of this significant early medieval frontier work, which remains one of the most substantial linear monuments of its era in Britain.
