Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork monument constructed during the reign of King Offa of Mercia in the late eighth century, forming a substantial boundary between the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and the Welsh kingdoms to the west. The section preserved in Highbury Wood, located west of Glyn Farm in Gloucestershire, comprises an upstanding bank and ditch characteristic of the dyke's construction throughout its length, which extends for approximately 149 miles along the England-Wales border. This particular stretch demonstrates the physical engineering typical of Offa's Dyke, with the earthwork constructed from quarried material to form a prominent linear barrier across the landscape. The monument represents a significant example of eighth-century territorial demarcation and remains one of the most substantial linear earthworks surviving from the Anglo-Saxon period.
