Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork constructed in the late eighth century by order of King Offa of Mercia to demarcate the Anglo-Saxon kingdom's western frontier against Welsh territories. This particular section, located in Passage Grove west of Sheepcot in Gloucestershire, forms part of the longer dyke system that extends northwards into the Welsh Marches. The monument comprises a substantial bank with ditch, typical of the dyke's construction throughout its length, and remains a significant archaeological record of early medieval territorial demarcation and engineering. The Dyke represents one of the most substantial linear monuments of the period and is testament to the administrative ambition and resources of the Mercian kingdom during the reign of Offa (757–796).
