Offa's Dyke is a late eighth-century linear earthwork that forms part of the extensive defensive frontier constructed under King Offa of Mercia between approximately 757 and 796. This section south-east of Fron in Shropshire comprises a substantial bank and ditch running broadly north to south, representing the physical demarcation between the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and the Welsh kingdoms to the west. The monument survives as a prominent upstanding bank with an associated ditch, characteristic of the construction method employed across much of the dyke's 177-kilometre length. The survival of this section demonstrates the durability of eighth-century earthwork engineering and remains significant as evidence of early medieval territorial control and political boundaries.
