Offa's Dyke is a substantial linear earthwork constructed in the late eighth century under the direction of King Offa of Mercia to define and defend the Anglo-Saxon frontier with Wales. This particular section, measuring approximately 270 metres in length and situated south of Pen-y-Bryn in Clwyd, comprises a ditch and bank typical of the monument's construction, with the bank rising to a considerable height above the ditch on the English side. The dyke extends for some 240 kilometres along the Welsh border and represents one of the most ambitious engineering projects of Anglo-Saxon England, marking both a territorial boundary and a statement of political power. This section survives as an upstanding earthwork of archaeological and historical importance, demonstrating the scale and ambition of eighth-century frontier management.
