Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork monument constructed during the eighth century, most likely under the direction of King Offa of Mercia, to establish a territorial boundary between the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and the Welsh kingdoms to the west. This particular section, located south of the Chirbury-Montgomery road in Shropshire, extends for approximately 390 metres and represents a substantial portion of the larger dyke system that runs discontinuously for some 240 kilometres along the England-Wales border. The earthwork comprises a ditch and bank arrangement typical of the monument's construction, with the bank standing as a substantial linear ridge when well-preserved. This section survives as a significant archaeological witness to eighth-century border management and political geography, forming part of one of the most ambitious engineering projects of the Anglo-Saxon period.
