Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork forming part of the great defensive frontier constructed in the eighth century under the direction of King Offa of Mercia. This particular section, extending approximately 1960 metres from Yew Tree Farm to the quarries north-east of Granner Wood in Radnorshire, comprises a substantial bank and ditch characteristic of the monument's construction across the Welsh borderland. The dyke served to demarcate territorial and political boundaries between the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and the Welsh kingdoms to the west during the early medieval period. This section remains substantially visible as an upstanding earthwork, preserving the engineering ambitions of eighth-century Mercian authority across the difficult terrain of the central Welsh marches.
