Overview

History & significance

Offa's Dyke: Section from Dudston Covert, Lymore to Lack Brook, Churchstoke is a linear earthwork forming part of the monumental frontier constructed in the late eighth century by King Offa of Mercia. This section of the dyke, which extends across the border region between present-day Wales and England near Churchstoke in Powys, comprises an earth bank and ditch that originally would have served as a territorial boundary and defensive barrier between the Kingdom of Mercia and Welsh kingdoms. The earthwork survives as a prominent ridge-and-ditch feature across the upland landscape, preserving a substantial portion of one of the most significant Anglo-Saxon engineering projects. The dyke represents a remarkable investment of labour and demonstrates Offa's ambitions to consolidate Mercian power and establish a defined western frontier during the latter part of his reign, circa 784 to 796 AD.
