Offa's Dyke is a substantial linear earthwork constructed during the late eighth century under King Offa of Mercia to demarcate and defend the Anglo-Saxon frontier with Wales. This particular section, extending from North Lodge in Leighton Park to the Old Quarry south of Green Wood, preserves significant stretches of the dike's characteristic form as a bank and ditch running broadly north to south across the landscape. The monument demonstrates the engineering capability of the Mercian kingdom and represents one of the most ambitious border works of the Early Medieval period in Britain. The earthwork remains today as a prominent landscape feature, with the bank standing to considerable height in places and the accompanying ditch still discernible along this length of the fortification.
