Offa's Dyke is a substantial linear earthwork constructed in the late eighth century under the direction of King Offa of Mercia to mark and defend the border between his kingdom and the Welsh territories to the west. The section within Boatwood Plantation, situated southwest of Chase Farm in Gloucestershire, survives as a prominent bank and ditch formation typical of the monument's construction across its length. This portion of the dyke represents part of the most extensive linear frontier work of Anglo-Saxon England, stretching over 150 kilometres from the Severn estuary northwards. The survival of earthwork sections such as this in Gloucestershire demonstrates the dyke's original ambition and engineering significance as both a boundary demarcation and a defensive structure.
