Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork that forms part of the extensive defensive frontier constructed during the reign of King Offa of Mercia in the late eighth century. This section, situated on Highbury Plains approximately 370 metres west of Birt's Barn in Gloucestershire, comprises a substantial bank and ditch configuration typical of the monument's construction across the Welsh marches. The earthwork represents one of the most significant territorial boundaries of Anglo-Saxon England, demarcating the political and cultural frontier between the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and the Welsh principalities to the west. The monument survives as an upstanding landscape feature and remains an important archaeological record of early medieval land division and royal authority.
