Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork constructed in the late eighth century, traditionally attributed to King Offa of Mercia (ruled 757–796), which formed a substantial boundary between the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and the Welsh kingdoms to the west. This section on Highbury Plains near Glyn Farm in Gloucestershire represents a portion of the approximately 240-kilometre defence work that runs from the Severn estuary to the Dee estuary on the Welsh border. The dyke comprises a substantial bank, in places accompanied by a ditch on the Welsh side, and survives here as an upstanding earthwork feature visible in the landscape. The monument's construction reflects eighth-century territorial consolidation and political assertion of Mercian power, and this particular section demonstrates the engineering scale of the undertaking and its sustained importance as a frontier marker.
