Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork constructed during the reign of King Offa of Mercia in the late eighth century, forming a major boundary work between the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and Welsh territories. The section on Madgett Hill, located in Gloucestershire south east of Brook House, comprises part of this extensive defensive and territorial demarcation line that extends for approximately 149 miles along the Welsh border. At this location the dyke survives as a substantial bank with accompanying ditch, representing the characteristic form of the monument whereby an earthen mound was raised from material excavated from the adjacent ditch. The Madgett Hill section exemplifies the strategic construction of Offa's Dyke across variable topography, marking a significant achievement of late Saxon engineering and territorial control.
