Overview

History & significance

Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork monument constructed during the late eighth century, most likely under the direction of King Offa of Mercia, to demarcate the border between the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and the Welsh principalities to the west. The section at Madgett Hill, located in Gloucestershire, represents part of this extensive defensive and boundary system which extends for approximately 177 kilometres from the Severn Estuary to the Dee Estuary. At this location the dyke survives as an earthen bank and ditch, characteristic of the monument's construction across much of its length, and remains a significant landscape feature demonstrating medieval territorial organisation and engineering. The survival of the Madgett Hill section contributes to understanding the overall strategic and political importance of Offa's Dyke as a marker of frontier control during the early medieval period.
