Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork constructed during the late eighth century under the direction of King Offa of Mercia to demarcate the boundary between his kingdom and the Welsh territories to the west. The section on Madgett Hill, located 580 metres west of The Old Mill in Gloucestershire, comprises a substantial bank and ditch formation that survives as a prominent archaeological feature in the landscape. At this point along the dyke's course, the earthwork demonstrates the engineering effort invested in establishing this frontier, with the bank rising significantly above the surrounding terrain and the associated ditch forming a marked depression. The monument represents a critical phase in Anglo-Saxon frontier management and territorial definition during the late eighth century, and its survival enables study of both the construction methods and the strategic positioning of this major defensive and political boundary.
