Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork of eighth-century date constructed under the direction of King Offa of Mercia to demarcate the border between English and Welsh territories. The section on St Briavels Common, situated 230 metres north of Hudnalls Farm in Gloucestershire, comprises part of this extensive defensive and administrative boundary that extends over 80 kilometres along the Wales-England border. At this location the dyke survives as a substantial bank with a ditch on its western face, characteristic of its construction as an upcast feature built from soil extracted during the parallel ditching operation. The monument represents a significant example of eighth-century Anglo-Saxon engineering and territorial administration in the borderlands between the Kingdom of Mercia and Wales.
