Overview

History & significance

Creswell Crags Gorge contains a series of caves and rock shelters in Nottinghamshire that preserve important evidence of human occupation spanning from the Middle Palaeolithic through to the Bronze Age. Pinhole Cave, Mother Grundy's Parlour, and Robin Hood's Cave are among the principal sites within the gorge, with Pinhole Cave yielding particularly significant Palaeolithic deposits including artefacts and faunal remains dating to approximately 40,000 years ago. The caves were occupied intermittently during the Late Glacial period and subsequent Mesolithic phases, with later Neolithic and Bronze Age activity also attested. The limestone gorge itself, cut by a small watercourse, provided natural shelters that attracted successive populations of hunter-gatherers and their descendants, making Creswell Crags an invaluable archive of human adaptation and settlement patterns across the Pleistocene and Holocene periods.
