Overview

History & significance

Creswell Gorge is a limestone valley in Nottinghamshire containing multiple caves and rock shelters of considerable Palaeolithic and Mesolithic significance. Pinhole Cave, Mother Grundy's Parlour, and Robin Hood's Cave are among the principal cavities, which have yielded evidence of human occupation spanning the Upper Palaeolithic period through to the Mesolithic. Excavations at these sites, particularly in the early twentieth century, produced finds including worked flint tools, bone implements, and faunal remains that demonstrate sustained use of the gorge by hunter-gatherer communities during the Late Glacial and early post-glacial periods. The caves preserve stratigraphic sequences documenting environmental change and human adaptation across several millennia of prehistoric settlement in the East Midlands.
