Creswell Gorge is a limestone valley in Derbyshire containing multiple caves of significant Palaeolithic and later prehistoric importance. The gorge has yielded evidence of human occupation spanning the late Upper Palaeolithic period through the Mesolithic, with Church Hole Cave and Boat House Cave among the principal sites producing archaeological material. Church Hole Cave has produced finds including bone and antler tools, whilst Boat House Cave likewise demonstrates occupation during the later stages of the Palaeolithic. The gorge represents one of the most important sequences of cave occupation in the British Midlands, with its stratified deposits contributing substantially to understanding post-glacial human settlement and subsistence practices in the region.
