Overview

History & significance

Creswell Gorge is a limestone gorge in Derbyshire containing multiple caves of significant Palaeolithic importance. The gorge has yielded evidence of human occupation spanning from the Middle Palaeolithic through to the Neolithic period, with Boat House Cave and Church Hole Cave being among the most archaeologically productive sites. Church Hole Cave is particularly notable for its Upper Palaeolithic occupation deposits and has produced finds including flint tools and animal remains, whilst Boat House Cave has likewise contributed to understanding of late glacial human activity in the region. The caves represent important records of hunter-gatherer exploitation of the landscape during the final phases of the last Ice Age and the subsequent early Postglacial period, making Creswell Gorge a key locality for British Palaeolithic archaeology.
