Overview

History & significance

Park Law fort is an Iron Age hillfort situated in Roxburghshire, in the Scottish Borders. The site comprises a defended enclosure positioned on elevated terrain, characteristic of Iron Age fortifications in south-eastern Scotland dating to the late pre-Roman iron age period. The fort's defensive works include substantial earthwork ramparts typical of contemporary hillforts in the region, which served as centres of settlement and control during the later centuries before the Roman advance into Scotland. Park Law represents an important example of the fortified settlements that dominated the landscape of the Borders during the Iron Age, before the dramatic reorganisation of settlement patterns following Roman military campaigns in the first and second centuries AD.
